What to compare before choosing a hotel
The best hotel choice is the one that works for your route, sleep, budget and flexibility—not simply the one with the lowest headline rate.
Use this hotel comparison checklist before booking to turn a long list of rooms into a confident, like-for-like decision.
1. Compare the location you will actually use
Look beyond the city name. Check the neighbourhood, walking route to the places on your itinerary, airport or station connections, late-night transport and the time needed to reach your first activity.
2. Compare the total stay, not the first price
Check taxes, resort or city fees, breakfast, parking, baggage storage, cleaning charges and the currency used at checkout. A slightly higher nightly rate can be better value when it removes daily transfers or extra meals.
Bed type, room size, view, accessibility, air conditioning, Wi-Fi and the number of guests allowed.
Free-cancellation deadline, prepayment, deposit, no-show rules and the process for changing dates.
Transit, walking, luggage handling and the time lost getting to your first and last stop.
3. Read reviews for patterns
Prioritise recent, detailed reviews that mention noise, cleanliness, staff response, lift access and the exact room category. One dramatic review is less useful than a repeated pattern across many stays.
4. Confirm the final page
Room inventory, policies and availability change. Open the final booking page, compare at least two suitable options and save the cancellation deadline in your trip notes.
- Match the room to the number of travellers and beds needed.
- Check check-in hours and late-arrival instructions.
- Confirm payment currency and whether the card is charged now.
- Save the address for your transfer or taxi booking.
